Volkswagen showed off a design sketch of its new ID. Aero sedan for China on Wednesday. The low-slung four-door is first aimed at Chinese market, but a version will come to North America and Europe later this decade. Its world premiere is scheduled for June 27 at 8 a.m.

VW is calling the ID. Aero the first fully electric limousine for the Chinese market. Despite the pandemic, the country minted almost 50,000 new millionaires last year according to Statista, and because it's cheaper to hire a driver there than in the United States, many of them use limousine-style vehicles with chauffeurs. It's why Lincoln, Audi and other automakers are placing their bigger cars on sale in that country first.

The vehicle is part of the company's Accelerate plan to introduce at least one new electric model each year globally, starting in 2021 with the ID.4 GTX. VW wants 70 percent of its cars to be all-electric by 2030, which is twice as much as previously planned.

It's also making billion-dollar investments in mobility, software updates and autonomous driving.

The ID. Aero is based on the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform that also is used for the ID. 4 crossover and ID. Buzz van, using some of the same design language. The nose and tail in particular are built for cheating the wind with the most efficiency. It also takes some cues from the handsome Volkswagen Arteon sedan.

At 197 inches, the VW ID. Aero is about 5 inches bigger than the Arteon, leading to more interior space for both chauffeur and passenger.

That puts it in the same category as the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air, though it shouldn't be as expensive as those. The Audi e-tron GT and new Polestar 5 will be closer competitors.

The new sedan will sit at the top of VW's electric range, which so far only includes the ID.4 here in the U.S.

The North American version of the new seven-passenger ID. Buzz van will debut in early 2023, but when it goes on sale in 2024 has not been determined. It also hasn't been determined if it will be listed as a 2024 or 2025 model.

VW says the ID. Aero concept is expected to go on sale in China in the second half of 2023. Around the same time the company will introduce a series version for both Europe and North America. The Aero will be produced at the company's plant in Emden, Germany. More details will be revealed next week.
