An 8-year-old girl who posted a "dramatic" sign on her bedroom door has left the internet in stitches this week.

On Wednesday, Redditor user u/UseOnceandDestroy27 shared a picture of the makeshift bedroom sign that read: "Don't come in without knocking. I might be having a moment."

With more than 61,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments, the sign left many in stitches One said: "That's a mood," while another Redditor wrote: "Same girl, same."

Researchers agree that by age 6 most children will understand the concept of privacy and may begin to ask for their own in the home.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has written that privacy is a part of growing up and leads children to gain their own autonomy and individuality. While it isn't always easy to let go and supervise your child less, giving them more freedom is a key part of helping them grow.

Experts agree that raising a healthy, trustworthy and independent child requires honoring their privacy, giving them space to be trusted, and allowing them appropriate levels of privacy that align with your rules as a parent.

But it was the wording of the young girls' bedroom sign that sparked particular attention online, with many laughing at the phrase: "I might be having a moment."

"I'd love to hear what she describes as a moment and how that shapes her life," said one commenter.

"She's just dramatic. She gets it from her mom," joked the poster when asked what a "moment" might mean.

Another reply said: "Cute. I think that's probably around the age I would have been embarrassed to be caught singing along to something silly or dancing around or whatever. I probably had moments too."

"We all have moments," joked another reply.

"Same, kid, same," said another Redditor: "She should laminate those and sell them. I'd buy one."

Meanwhile, other replies praised the girl for setting her own boundaries at home.

"I'm in my 30s and I still don't know how to establish healthy relationship boundaries like she does," said one commenter, while another wrote: "Cool. Glad to see kids are getting to understand boundaries. Bedrooms should be a safe space."

The Child Mind Institute says that helping your child understand boundaries is extremely important for their development: "Helping kids get comfortable advocating for their boundaries early will help them do so in the future when the stakes can be much higher," they said.

"Helping your child make a plan for what to do when someone isn't respecting their feelings or boundaries will give your child the chance to practice standing up for themselves," explained the Child Mind Institute.

But they also point out the importance of ensuring your child understands the scenarios where it is better to speak to a grown-up. For example, if hitting or pushing is involved, a child won't take no for an answer or in a situation where they feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

"I think a lot of us could do with a sign like this," said one inspired commenter on Reddit, while another wrote: "Privacy is priceless."

Another parent amused by the sign left their own warning in the comments and said: "As an experienced mom of a rather dramatic 14-year-old who was exactly this dramatic at this age, just know, it never stops. Lol."
