There’s no love quite like puppy love and Ireland is a nation of dog lovers — with 25pc of the overall population owning dogs, and nearly half of adults aged over 50 are dog owners. Pets, especially dogs, proved to be the pandemic’s cute, furry growth area as people sought companionship and entertainment while stuck at home. This, in turn, fuelled sales in dog-related homewares, fashion and even tech for pets.

As a nod to International Dog Day tomorrow (August 26) and our growing love of our canine friends, we’ve compiled some doggy décor that can easily be incorporated into your home. Thankfully, we’ve moved, quite tastefully, from dogs playing poker to plenty of non-kitschy décor that will channel your love of your dog into your home. Minimalist style, lots of patterns, traditional design, modern spaces... dogs go with everything, and a touch of doggy décor is a good way to inject personality into a space.

A dog print (Jam Art, Desenio) is inexpensive and whimsical without being overkill. If you want a bigger splash, try a dog-themed wallpaper such as Sophie Allport’s Woof Wallpaper, available from very.ie. Homesense and TK Maxx are retailers that have always championed pets, with a huge selection of pet-related accessories from beds to bowls, but they’ve also branched into dog-themed homewares, from cushions and doormats to lamps, mugs and door stoppers.

After Jeff Koons made his iconic balloon-dog sculpture in the ’90s, versions of his pup in bright and metallic colours have been popping up everywhere to become a stylish decorative accent.

Pop the art-inspired figurine on top of a stack of coffee-table books or work it into your living-room shelving for an arty add-on (Wayfair).

Eero Aarnio’s Puppy is both functional but far from straight-faced. Shaped like a small dog, it is a sculpture, a toy and a small stool so it can multi-task in a kid’s room or add some whimsy to other spaces in the house (Finnish Design Shop).

Oliver Bonas is another retailer that’s proving to be a one-stop-shop for anything pet-related, with homewares, gifts and accessories for your favourite pooch. We especially love its gold Dachshund bookends.

UK designer Matt Pugh is known for his playful approach to contemporary homewares and his cheeky dog lamp, which features a wooden body inspired by the workshop mascot and Matt’s boisterous Terrier with a cone-shaped lampshade.

Dog-themed lamps are quite the popular accessory — you can almost choose your breed, from Boxer lamps at Finders Keepers to Scotties at Amara and twin Terriers at Next.

If you fancy bedding down with your pooch, visit Marks & Spencer for dog-themed duvet sets with sausage-dog and Dalmatian motifs, and grab one of their cute cotton dog cushions for some added comfort. Just add dog for cuddles.
